Session 1 - Closing

What obstacles would you need to overcome to integrate technology in your classes by teaching effective search strategies and website evaluation?

I think it is important to open the students' eyes about fake sites. Many are too willing to believe everything they read or see especially on the internet. I think showing them fake sites will be a real help to informing them about being cautious when reading information on the internet.

Well I'd have to work within my content to a certain degree obviously. Not a huge obstacle. I would have to work within whatever obstacles exist technologically speaking. I have an LCD typically to use... I would much prefer a smartboard... but hey beggars can't be choosers. I am thinking a great deal about technology in the classroom... it is my smart goal, but also an area of interest of mine.

Time would be one obstacle, but, as you already mentioned, this does allow us more time to think about what we ant to do. Making sure all students have charged computers would also be useful. LC

TIME is the biggest obstacle. Finding the time to plan the lessons and implement into a math curriculum. These strategies are valuable to the use of technology in my classroom and I had not thought about their importance for my classes. I believe that these strategies are need to be shared in all classrooms that internet searching will be done. If we are all doing this, then students will be more and more savvy about their information gathering.

I sometimes despair that those who have learned this stuff already will be bored by the review while those who have been resistant to it in the past will continue to not get it. I need to believe that by reviewing these skills and this info I will move kids forward in their knowledge and skills.

One obstacle for me to overcome would be my own "fear" of technology. Workshops such as this help "demystify" technology, so I'm more comfortable trying new things. Teaching students techniques for doing a google search is important, as I agree that many students simply choose the first site or the first few that appear without doing a more thoughtful exploration.

I hope to have better access to the laptops. Class is in a portable classroom-carts are difficult to move out. I can go to Lab for activities and do take advantage of that option. I have requested a projector so we can do more group classroom activities. Need to research more options to fit my program on line.
I need to continue to explore - "play" with web and technology to become more comfortable. Just love learning!! Sue

I would need to become more familiar with the strategies demonstrated today for teaching students to effectively search the internet, and explore and evaluate web sites to be used for specific lessons in advance of teaching the students.

Obstacle #1: A Room of My Own.
I don't have my own classroom (I move around every period), so being able to set things up, keep computers charged, etc. can be difficult and challenging, at best. I need to have my own projector, or a projector in every room; maybe the rooms can be hardwired for video & sound; some way to make it so I can keep all of my tech info in my computer and just "plug in and go."

Obstacle #2: 1-2-1
This past quarter I tried to make my class almost totally online, but struggled because of a lack of knowledge, creativity and understanding of exactly how to do it. Part of it is my lack of understanding and creativity (see Obstacle #3), but a larger part was the logistical mess of scheduling computer time. We're not going one-to-one computers next year, so I'll have to deal with that again. Plus, dealing with students in poverty who cannot access technology from home, can be limiting, especially without 1-to-1 laptops and a class trying to be mostly technological.

Obstacle #3: Me, Myself, & Creativity
I've come a long way in learning about integrating technology, but I still get stuck in a rut of using technology in traditional means (word processing, etc.). I just need to re-look at the curriculum and my practices and ask myself," What is a better way, using technology, online searches, etc." What SKILLS can I ensure that my students leave with, beyond what is mandated in the curriculum, that will help make them lifelong learners and effective comunicators.

Teaching basic algebra skills, I have not thought much about research skills. It seems that I don't have enough time to thoroughly teach my curriculum as it is. Researching is not a strength of mine either.

I want to at least make sure my students know what information technology is, what it can be used for in society today, and how it can used o their advantage.

Beyond this, I want to use technology as a learning tool to help my students in the classroom.
